How to Get an Instagram Transcript
There are three ways to get an Instagram transcript. You can turn on Instagram's own captions and read along, type the words out yourself, or paste the Reel's link into a transcript generator and get the full text with timestamps. The first two cost nothing but time; the third takes about ten seconds.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Time for a 1-minute Reel | Text you can copy | Timestamps | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram captions | As long as the Reel | No | No | Free |
| Typing it out | 5–10 minutes | Yes | Only if you add them | Free |
| Transcript generator | About 10 seconds | Yes | Yes | 1 credit |
Method 1: Read Instagram's built-in captions
Instagram can generate captions automatically and lay them over a Reel while it plays. That helps you follow a video with the sound off, but the words are only on screen while the Reel is playing.
Steps
- 1Open the Reel in the Instagram app.
- 2Turn captions on. Look for the captions option in the Reel's ⋯ menu, or under Settings → Accessibility → Captions. The exact names move around between app versions.
- 3Play the Reel and read the captions as they appear. Pause whenever you need to catch up.
Limits
- You can't select, copy or save the captions.
- Creators can switch auto captions off, and they aren't offered in every language.
- There are no timestamps and nothing to export.
Method 2: Type it out yourself
If you only need a few lines, or you want to check every word yourself, transcribing by hand works. It is slow, though: plan on five to ten minutes for each minute of talking.
Steps
- 1Open the Reel on a computer at instagram.com, where a click on the video pauses it.
- 2Play a sentence, pause, type it, and repeat. Write down the time shown on the video if you need timestamps.
- 3To go faster, let voice typing do the listening: open Google Docs in Chrome, choose Tools → Voice typing, and play the Reel out loud near your microphone. Then fix the mistakes.
Limits
- Slow for anything longer than a few sentences.
- Voice typing struggles with music, strong accents and several people talking.
- Names, brands and numbers need checking either way.
Method 3: Paste the link into a transcript generator
A transcript generator fetches the Reel, runs speech recognition on the audio and hands you every line with its timestamp. You can try it right here:
Steps
- 1In Instagram, tap the share icon on the Reel and choose Copy link.
- 2Paste the link into the box above and press Get Transcript.
- 3Copy the text, or download it as a TXT file or as SRT and VTT subtitles. Got a list of Reels? The Batch tab takes up to 50 links at once.
You need an account, and each transcript uses one credit; failed ones are refunded. Compare the transcript credit plans to pick the one that fits how often you transcribe.
Questions about Instagram transcripts
Does Instagram have a built-in transcript feature?
Instagram can show auto-generated captions while a video plays, but it doesn't let you copy or download them as a transcript. For text you can keep, type it out or use a transcript generator.
Can I get a transcript of a private Instagram video?
Not with a transcript generator: it can only reach videos that anyone can watch. For a private video you have access to, captions or typing it out are the options.
Can I transcribe Instagram Stories?
Our tool works with Reels and video posts. Stories disappear after 24 hours and need a login to view, so they can’t be fetched from a link.
Is it okay to transcribe someone else's Reel?
Transcribing for your own notes, research or a short quote is common. Republishing a creator's whole script as your own content is different, so ask the creator first. This isn't legal advice.
How accurate is an automatic transcript?
Clear speech usually comes out close to word for word. Background music, people talking over each other and unusual names cause most mistakes, so read it through before you publish anything.
